The 2013-2014 year has wrapped up for TGP and it’s been record-breaking!
After being founded in 2009 with 40 athletes from Georgetown, TGP celebrated its 5 year anniversary at George Washington University’s Charles Smith Center in May. In just five years, the program has grown immensely and now includes athletes from 4 universities: Georgetown, George Washington, Howard and Maryland.
There were also a record number 31 programs this year- 16 in the fall and 15 in the spring/summer! In these programs, there were 545 graduates for both semesters. On the athlete end, TGP broke a record with more than 100 athletes volunteering for programs in the spring semester. Everyone deserves a shoutout!
There have also been major events throughout the year for Grassroots. Grassroots was named ‘one of the best new nonprofits in DC’ by The Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington and more than 300 high schoolers participated in the Rock the Block HIV testing events. There were 11 runners a part of Team Grassroot who ran 13.1 miles in the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in May and overall raised a little over $6,000! We want to give a special shoutout to 5 students from the Washington International School who raised $4,560! Thank you Rohan Subramanian, Sonia Pearson, Matteo Schlitz, Giorgio Zampaglione, and Emanuela Lombardi!
We also want to recognize the outstanding team of athletes who were Grassroot Coordinators at their universities! A special shoutout goes to them for running Programs and Communications for TGP this year: Jane, Michael, Mackenzie, Elena, Darieal, Emily, Taylor, Jewel and Josh!
Our first ever Buzzfeed was created this year too! Check out 20 ways you know you’re a Grassroot Coach!
