William Darrenkamp
American, Retired Swim

Will, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, joined Grassroots Health in the Fall of 2022 seeking further opportunities to work with kids in the community after years of being an age-group swim coach. Will came to American University as a swimmer, competing in his first three years before medically disqualifying from the sport due to injuries. During his time at AU, he has sought to diversify his education, working towards separate degrees in International Studies and Environmental Studies. He has concentrated his studies on Environmental Sustainability and Global Health, with subsequent concentrations in Energy, Pollution, and Finance. Additionally, Will was also an Analyst for the university’s Environmental, Social, and Governance Fund, and worked his way to becoming the fund manager in his time at AU. During the summer of 2023, Will had the opportunity to be a training fellow at Grassroots Health while also working for a boutique sustainability consulting firm as an analyst. He is committed to sustainability and environmental equity and wishes to continue down these avenues post-graduation. Since joining GRH, Will has taken on the role of one of the primary recruiters of American University athletes with the goal of growing the university’s volunteer base.

At Grassroots Health, Will turns into Will.I.Am. This nickname and persona are embodied by living like the kids he works with, by having fun and finding joy in little things. One of his favorite activities is to visit new coffee shops in DC, where so far he has favored Zeke’s and Compass. Will also loves playing sports outside of his own, competing in Volleyball and Pickleball tournaments for fun and a little extra competition.
