Maxine Engel (she/her/hers) proudly hails from Memphis, TN. Entering her senior year at George Washington University, she is majoring in both Public Health and Business while also minoring in Law and Society. Max is a member of the women’s basketball team and is excited to lead and grow in her last year of collegiate athletics. Outside of athletics and academics, she joined the Grassroots Health family as a volunteer in 2022 as a way to meet athletes from other DC universities while also connecting and investing in the health and wellbeing of her new home. Max also acts as a program lead in the Voice in Sport Foundation’s advocacy program which works to create and promote women in sport and advance new legislation surrounding Title IX initiatives. This past year, she collaborated with the VIS leadership team, GW athletic department, and fellow GW athletes to found a GW chapter for Voice in Sport. She hopes to use her new campus connections and network to recruit more athletes to the Grassroots family! Her work in Grassroots has confirmed her interest to pursue a career in health policy and to eventually attend law school to work towards achieving regulatory and legislative changes to our healthcare and education system.
Max and Ruby… Ruby and Max.. who knew these bunnies could make their way to becoming a GRH training fellow! Max chose her nickname as a homage to one of her favorite childhood TV series. While not living by her Teamworks and Google Calendars, she loves to explore DC by bike(a proud Capital Bikeshare member in the top 1% of DC riders) and most often listening to music or NPR while doing it. Her music taste is expansive and spans all genres! Max loves to eat, cook, and especially to find new restaurants in DC and rank them on her Beli account (@maxineengel). She enjoys Mediterranean food but is not picky, and her all time favorite and go-to snack is hummus and pita chips. You also can’t know Max without knowing that she drinks a cup of black coffee every day and even goes as far as dubbing it as one of the highlights of her day!
