Lara Negrón Ocasio
Program Coordinator

Lara Negrón Ocasio (she/her/ella), rejoins Grassroots Health as a Program Coordinator after three years as a Grassroots Health volunteer health educator. As a Program Coordinator, she works closely with key stakeholders (students, volunteers, teachers, and community members) to implement effective health promotion programming. Lara has a particular passion for Grassroots Fam, Grassroots Health’s programs that engage family members in health literacy modules and health communication workshops.

In her time at George Washington University, she was a member of the varsity women’s rowing team and the athletic department’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force. Born and raised in Northern Virginia, her passions include all things DMV, listening to Puerto Rican rap artist Bad Bunny, and making nutritious vegan meals for all to enjoy. Lara is most looking forward to creating strong relationships within the DC community to best deliver on TGP’s goal of health promotion in all aspects! Lara holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Affairs & Latin American and Hemispheric Studies from George Washington University.

In addition to her work at Grassroots Health, Lara has been selected as a Youth Ambassador for the US Conference on AIDS and as a participant in ViiV Healthcare’s Youth and Community Summits, which bring together approximately 30 of the country’s top leaders under the age of 25 to build solidarity, learn about late-breaking sexual health science and policy, and create community organizing strategies to advance health equity.

As the silliest and goofiest member on staff, Mango is known to be in the office early munching on her daily oats, hugging the office plush, and trying on gear options (LOL). Though her official government Grassroots nickname is Larabar, due to long standing controversy with the IRS, she has rebranded as Mango Larabar (Mango for short) as an homage to her Caribbean gyal roots. She loves to work alongside the college and high school interns, usually dubbed her “little besties”. You’ll probably catch her in the gym rowing even though she is washed up, in Whole Foods analyzing the best vegan snack deals, or at Gregory’s coffee shop testing out new flavor combinations!
