Gabrielle Nelson
Howard, Lacrosse

Gabrielle Nelson is a Site Coordinator with Grassroots Health. She joined the organization in the spring of 2024, after being introduced to it through a teammate on Howard University’s women’s lacrosse team. Gabrielle is currently pursuing a degree in chemical engineering at Howard, where she combines her technical studies with her passion for creating more inclusive and equitable spaces in STEM and beyond. Her academic interests center around inclusive product development in skincare and hair care, with future plans to become a process engineer or project manager. Gabrielle is particularly drawn to the bigger-picture side of innovation, helping shape how companies design, market, and manufacture products that prioritize safety, representation, and care for underrepresented communities. As a Site Coordinator, Gabrielle values the sense of community most, both within the organization and among the students she works with each week. Not being from the D.C. area, she credits Grassroots Health for immersing her into the local culture and giving her a meaningful space to serve, learn, and grow alongside others who share her commitment to making a lasting impact.

Gabrielle’s Grassroots nickname is “Yo Gabba Gabba.” She actually picked the name because she grew up loving the colorful, feel-good show, and it perfectly captures her upbeat personality and positive energy. Just like the show, Gabrielle brings creativity, joy, and a little bit of organized chaos wherever she goes. She’s fiercely competitive, whether it’s on the lacrosse field, solving a  puzzle, or beating someone at Scrabble or chess. A huge Hamilton fan, she can quote every line from the musical, and also every line from The Office. Outside of school, Gabrielle loves Pilates and going on walks around the DC area. What she loves most about her work with Grassroots Health are the kids and their energy, humor, and curiosity remind her of the importance of showing up with heart. Not being from D.C., she feels the Grassroots community has truly welcomed her in and made the city feel like home. Yo Gabba Gabba brings that same warmth and connection everywhere she goes, believing that a little joy, hard work, and laughter can change everything.
