“I was happy that I was selected to be a part of the Leadership Team, and I am ready to use what I learned this weekend to help make Grassroots even better!”- Diana Sainvil (Gtown ’14).
Grassroots is excited to announce our new 2012-13 Grassroots Leaders Team. This board includes 8 student-athletes from Howard, Georgetown and The George Washington University. Matt Mullman (Gtown, Rowing ’13), Jane Wallis (GWU, Soccer ’14), Mackenzie Jones (GWU, Lacrosse ’14), Jewerl Stroman (Howard, Track ’14), Carmen Waldrop (Howard, Soccer ’13), Diana Sainvil (Gtown, Track ’14), Lauren Byrne (GWU, Rowing ’13), Jackson Carnes (GWU, Cross Country ’14) were all excited to head to Orlando, Florida, for a three-day intense leadership retreat. These student-athletes have all been involved with Grassroots for a while, and were excited to get even more involved in running the organization. They were united in the mission to take Grassroots to the next level, and the retreat was about building a plan to make that happen.
Upon arriving at Coronado Springs resort, everyone was really energized and ready to go. In the first session, the leadership team learned about strategic planning for non-profit organizations, and in subsequent days learned the 101s in different areas of management. The team was enlightened with all the new materials they learned in just a few days. They were able to put their heads together to come up with great ideas and goals to help improve the program for the upcoming year. The leadership team was grateful to have the opportunity to get out of DC and to Orlando for a change of scenery.
“My coach always says it’s not about who is the strongest or weakest player on the team, but about how deep the team is. This weekend has been all about making Grassroots an organization that is deep. We’ve all learned a ton, so it’s not going to be just one or two people that are running things. I’m excited to be on this team,” said Lauren Bryne on the final day of the training.
