We’re excited to share that Grassroots Health has been selected as a 2026 grantee of the Alzner Foundation. The Alzner Foundation, started by former Washington Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner and his wife, Mandy Alzner, invests in youth sports and enrichment programs across the DMV. Their goal is to remove barriers so every child can play, grow, and thrive through opportunity, teamwork, and community. They fund initiatives that build confidence, strengthen leadership, and create real pathways for young people to succeed.

On February 26, that commitment came to life. Karl and Mandy, along with Jodie MacDougall, Director of Community Engagement for the Alzner Foundation, visited us at KIPP DC: AIM Academy. They joined for a 6th-grade nutrition program and witnessed Corner Store Scavenge (a game about the importance of making balanced choices when deciding what to eat, and how peers can influence food choices) in action. Students were fully engaged, reading labels, comparing ingredients, and confidently explaining their choices. Four of our college student-athlete volunteers led the discussion with focus and care. It wasn’t staged or rehearsed; it was real learning, happening in real time.

After the site visit, Karl said,
“Seeing Grassroots in action confirms that their programming is not only impactful for youth looking to move and gain knowledge, but also for the college students as they grow as leaders and give back to the next generation. I really loved having the chance to see it in person.”
What made this visit truly special was how the Alzner Foundation showed up. Karl, Mandy, and Jodie were present, curious, and genuinely interested in the work. They asked thoughtful questions, listened closely, and connected with students and athletes. We always value opening our classrooms and feel honored to share this space with partners who care so deeply. That kind of engagement makes all the difference, and we’re grateful to build it together.
